that leads the eye to know.

At the bakery,
a boy
carries from the oven
a tray of conjoined rolls
and softly,
as tenderly as lifting an infant,
he separates the buns
placing them on wax sheets
one, upon one, upon one,
upon buttered one.
He looks at me,
daring me to choose,
between his soft, silent hands
and the rolls.
