Some Adjectives

       Some adjectives need no nouns,
       will acquire them of their own accord.
       "Sumptuous" comes to mind, as in a voice
       rising to the balcony of the opera house;
       embracing, warm -- a tongue, a mouth,
       a breath circling low and high;
       a slow climb and ride
       to comfort all expectation.

       So, too, the word summons you,
       reclined, awake within a dream
       of comforters and pillows;
       the wash of sun across a bed
       while rain descends in sheets
       beyond the window sill.

       Companion words come of their own accord;
       words that play ink across the page
       with no resort to pen or hand,
       that fall easily into place
       and lend their curves and spaces
       to the eye, lips, and tongue,
       again, again and again;
       to show the loving place
       where all such words begin.
